Many years ago. In this Thakurgaon district town no township was formed then. There was a huge sal forest on both sides of the flowing Tangan River. Surrounded by green forests, the name of this area was Shalbari Pargana.
In the early nineteenth century, the town was part of the Maldivian pargana. Later, Tankanath, the son of zamindar Budhinath, formed the 'Malduar State' to gain the confidence of the British government. It is said that Tanknath obtained the title of 'Chowdhury' by burning money notes and making tea for a British royal official. After that he accepted the title of 'Raja' by submitting to Maharaja Girijanath Roy of Dinajpur. Raja Tankanath Chowdhury's wife's name was Jayarma Shankari Devi. Molduar State became ‘Ranishankail’ after the name of ‘Ranishankari Devi’.
Before Maldwar, this region belonged to Bhaturia Pargana. The thana was established here in 1893. This thana became an upazila in 1983.
At present Ranishankail upazila has 1 municipality, 8 unions and 124 mouzas.
